  • How is Club Tennis set up?
Club Tennis is a mix of all levels practicing together with invite-only practices included. To get a better look at each players ability and have enough court space to practice singles/doubles, players are invited to a selective practice based on their tryouts results. Competitive practice is Tuesdays from 6-8:00pm and mixed practice is Tuesdays from 8-9pm and Wednesdays from 6:00-9pm. The main difference between practices is the practice times and that admittance into competitive practice requires a tryout.
  • What's the difference between A- and B- team?
A-team is the our main club tennis team. Entry is selective and requires a tryout. All players in this group ideally should be able to play really well, which is why most competitors from UK Club Tennis tend to be from the A-team. While we do play tennis games, more focus is on practice matches, especially during tournament season. B-team doesn't require a tryout and has a wider range of abilities in terms of tennis. Those that aren't on A are in this group. While B-members are allowed to compete (with officer approval), members in this group tend to be more social than competitive. Therefore, practices consist of mostly group games (like Queen of the Court, Dingles, etc) , with some practice match-play.
  • How can I move up from B-team to A-team?
Yes, it is possible to move up from B-team to A-team, and it has been done by players before. It can be done by tryout, Presidential overrides, and challenge system (determined by officer team). The most common and recommended way to make A-team is through tryouts. Remember that tryouts factor both ABILITY and COMMITMENT LEVELS. Willingness to compete in tournaments is a bonus. If you want to move up from B- to A-team, do not quit. We recommend being involved in Club Tennis, competing in tournaments, and then trying out again next year. We do notice standout players that who go the extra mile to improve their tennis ability and be involved with Club Tennis (ex: going to practices, competing in tournaments, sportmanship, getting along with the team, etc).
  • When are tryouts?
Tryouts are usually held between late August and early September. Everyone is invited to come to mixed practice and an officer will invite you to competitive practice if qualified. If you missed tryouts or are joining Club Tennis after tryouts have been completed, please email ukclubtennis@gmail.com so we can evaluate your ability. We do accept members in the Spring as well.
  • Who is eligible to join?
To be a part of Club Tennis, you must be a student or faculty at UK. We do accept students from BCTC as well.
  • What are you looking for in a player?
We are very accepting of new players. For tryouts, ability, involvement level, and match history are major factors. We also factor in attendance history, sportsmanship, willingness to compete, and the overall needs of the club team.
  • How do I get alerts about Club Tennis?

  • I'm an alumni of UK Club Tennis. Can I still go to practices?

  • I was on a college varsity team in the past. Can I still join?

  • I was on the team last year. Do I have to re-tryout?
YES. Unless told otherwise by the current President(s), everyone (whether new or returning) is highly encouraged to re-tryout each year, especially if you're planning to go to competitive practices. Being on A-team previously doesn't mean you're automatically A-team the next year.
  • When are practices?
Practices are currently twice a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm. An invite-only practice is held on Tuesday 6-8pm. Times vary for winter indoor practice during Jan-Mar.
  • What are practices like?
Practices are led by our officers. Practices are co-ed and typically involve drills, games, and practice match play. Some games we like to play include Dingles, Queen of the Court, and Davis Cup.
  • What is the skill level of Club Tennis?
Almost all of our club players have competed played competitively on their high school's tennis team, or USTA. The NTRP levels range from a 3.5-4.5 level.
  • Are practices mandatory?
All practices and tournaments are optional, but recommended. Attendance is considered for tournament roster selection and is a factor we pay attention to during tryouts.
  • I have a time conflict with my practice times. Can I attend the other practice?
Permission has to be granted by the current President. Keep in mind that practice times willl change in January when we move into indoor courts. In the meantime, you are welcome to use Club Tennis as a way to find hitting partners to hit with outside practice times.

Tournaments are held year round. So far, we've traveled to places such as Hilton Head, SC; Auburn, AL; Cincinnati, OH; and Cary, NC.

Tournaments consist of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The number of teams UK Club Tennis brings depends on the tournament.
